Select-a-Kibitzer: A Computer Tool that Gives Meaningful Feedback on Student Compositions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Select-a-Kibitzer is a computerized tool that gives feedback to students on their compositions in a unique way. The project is based on composition research which describes the process of writing as one of simultaneously solving multiple, possibly conflicting constraints. In Select-a-Kibitzer, each constraint is personified by a different character. A student enters a composition into the tool and then asks for feedback. A variety of natural language processing techniques are used to analyze the text. Then, each of the characters gives feedback on the text from its particular point of view. The student can focus on particular aspects of the writing process by choosing to get feedback from only one or a small subset of the critics. Select-a-Kibitzer differs greatly from standard “style checker” mechanisms that focus on surface features of the text. By using Latent Semantic Analysis, Select-a-Kibitzer can address a wide-range of meaning-oriented composition issues, including coherence, purpose, topic, and overall quality. This paper describes the composition research that forms the basis of the project, and the interaction and implementation of Select-aKibitzer. It focuses on the uses of LSA to provide semantic feedback to the writer. ∗This work was supported by a grant to the first author from the James S. McDonnell Foundation’s Cognitive Studies for Educational Practice Program.

ESSAY ASSESSMENT 1 Running head: ESSAY ASSESSMENT Essay Assessment with Latent Semantic Analysis
Latent semantic analysis (LSA) is an automated, statistical technique for comparing the semantic similarity of words or documents. In this paper, I examine the application of LSA to automated essay scoring. I compare LSA methods to earlier statistical methods for assessing essay quality, and critically review contemporary essay-scoring systems built on LSA, including the Intelligent Essay Asses...
متن کاملFormative Assessment and Feedback as Predictors of Students’ Engagement
To explore the effects of formative assessment on student engagement in classroom, 60 upper-intermediate level EFL students, were chosen out of a convenience sample of 120, using the Oxford Placement Test and were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. After the intervention, the students were asked to complete the Student Course Engagement Questionnaire. Independent sample t-tes...

This research explores the effects of three computer-mediated feedback modalities, that is, elicitation, recast, and meta-linguistics, on the learning of English participial, gerund, and infinitival phrases among Iranian intermediate-level EFL learners. The overriding focus of the present study was to investigate whether different types of feedback given through form-focused computer-human exch...
متن کاملTeaching Composition using Role Play and Feedback from Multiple Agents
Writing is an extremely difficult task because it requires the simultaneous solution of multiple, often conflicting constraints. This paper describes a two-component system which helps students write by helping them learn what the different constraints are, and how to address them. The first component is a 3D role-playing environment in which students control characters that are put in difficul...
متن کاملA Numerical Design Technique for a Relay - Type Feedback Control System
An efficient numerical method for the design and synthesis of compensator for a relay type control system is developed and discussed. Previous works based on the interactive graphic method are reviewed and it is shown that the combination of the trequency and time domain numerical techniques provide a powerful tool in design of a wide class of relay control systems. An example is presented to d...
